Centre for Nonviolence and Gender Advocacy in Nigeria (CENGAIN)

Centre for Nonviolence and Gender Advocacy in Nigeria (CENGAIN) is an Independent, not for profit, Non-governmental organization works towards the achievement of Peace, Gender Equality and Sustainable Development. Our activities vary from human rights, focusing on Women and Children’s Rights, Active-Nonviolence, Gender equality /equity, and Conflict Management.
CENGAIN works towards creating a society that honors the dignity and worth of the human person with the belief that every single individual has the capacity to move the world in the direction of peace through their daily nonviolent choice and actions.

VISION:

CENGAIN envisions a peaceful, nonviolent and gender sensitive society that aims to promote equal rights for all.

MISSION:

Our mission is to deepen commitment to justice, peace, tolerance, democracy, gender equality, respect for human rights and solidarity among people, communities and institutions.

LEGAL STATUS:

CENGAIN is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

CORE VALUES:

•Advocacy: An advocacy strategy to voice the issues affecting the most vulnerable especially women/youth.

•Community-level peace-building and human rights promotion.

•Empowerment: we believe that women and youth empowerment is critical to the attainment of peace and sustainable development.

•Institutional Development: people become aware that promoting unity and peace does not just affect the individual, but can have a massively positive impact on the wider community as well.

•Responsibility – In all of our work, we strive for transparency, responsible use of our resources, fairness in our relations, accountability, integrity and excellence.

OUR OBJECTIVES

1.Promoting and supporting through publications, training and the mass media the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence locally and nationally.

2. Promoting and advocating for peace, justice and development through educational campaigns with special emphasis on the participation of women in all development initiatives.

3. Training youth, women, religious, political and community leaders in leadership skills and how to build peaceful institutions and a just society.

4. Educating student and pupils from existing schools/ institutions on peace education, peer mediation and conflict transformation in order to institutionalize reconciliation, justice, nonviolence and peaceful coexistence.

5. Promoting and protecting the rights of women and children by supporting and campaigning for upholding and respecting the various human rights instruments including CEDAW, Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

6. Capacity Building for grassroot women through skill acquisition in order to empower them economically, increase their self-esteem and reduce their vulnerability to violence.

7. Trauma Counselling for victims of violent conflict and sexual/domestic violence.

8.Organizing trainings for young women; creation of forums to build awareness in the areas of rights, health, governance etc and to encourage their participation in developmental activities.

ACTIVITIES:

1. Peace and Nonviolence Education/Training: Educating, training and inspiring of youth/Adults in the practice of nonviolence.

2. Conflict Resolution/ Management Training: Training of staff and organizational personnel to resolve/manage work place conflict to improve productivity and positive output.

3. Community Peace Advocates (COPA): is about mobilizing, organizing, training and engaging the Youth at the grassroots in peace building in order to help them manage community and personal conflicts.

4. Survivors for Peace – Enabling victims of violent conflict and gender based violence turn their painful experience into a positive opportunity for development, leadership and to serve as inspiration to others.

5. Children for Peace (C4P) – Teaching Peace Education to pupil’s/children ages 6-12 yrs old.

6. Gender Mainstreaming- Women involvement in social and Economic development; advocating for the integration of women issues into the mainstream of all policies, programmes and resources for women empowerment.
